Medical Language Speaking Assessment For English
Use when asked to administer, score, or explain a Medical Language Speaking Assessment for English — modelled on the OET Medicine speaking sub-test — grounded in FormExamples/form-examples; the English-language counterpart to medical-language-speaking-assessment-for-cymraeg.
Clinical English-language speaking assessment for internationally educated healthcare professionals, modelled on the Occupational English Test (OET) Medicine speaking sub-test, using role-played patient scenarios and criterion-based scoring on linguistic and clinical communication indicators.
Scoring
Instrument: OET Speaking Sub-test (Medicine profession). Range 0–500 raw, graded:
- A (450–500) — high-level professional proficiency (pass for UK healthcare registration).
- B (350–440) — good professional proficiency (pass).
- C+ / C (200–340) — functional proficiency; further practice required for many regulators.
- D / E (0–190) — below functional threshold.
What it covers
Candidate details; a role-play patient interview; a role-play clinical explanation; linguistic criteria rating; and clinical communication indicators with an overall grade.
Common pitfalls
- Grading purely on grammatical accuracy — the OET-style rubric explicitly weighs clinical communication indicators (empathy, clarity of explanation, appropriate structure) alongside linguistic criteria; strong grammar with poor clinical communication style doesn't earn a top grade.
- Applying pass thresholds inconsistently across regulators — which grade counts as a "pass" can differ by the specific regulatory body a candidate is registering with; verify the applicable threshold rather than assuming Grade B is universally sufficient.
- Confusing this with the Welsh-language assessment — see Medical Language Speaking Assessment For Cymraeg; the two use different frameworks and scoring ranges and aren't directly comparable.
