# Workplace Stress Assessment

Workplace stress assessment using the UK HSE Management Standards
Indicator Tool to measure perceived stress across seven organizational
domains and identify teams or individuals at elevated risk of
work-related ill health.

## Scoring

**Instrument:** HSE Management Standards Indicator Tool (35 items, 1–5
Likert scale). Seven domain scores (1.0–5.0 each): Demands, Control,
Manager Support, Peer Support, Relationships, Role, Change.

- **Low Risk** — domain scores ≥ 4.0 (at or above HSE 80th percentile
  benchmark).
- **Moderate Risk** — 3.0–3.9 (around HSE 50th percentile).
- **High Risk** — 2.0–2.9 (below HSE 20th percentile; action
  required).
- **Very High Risk** — < 2.0 (urgent organizational intervention).

## What it covers

Demographics; and the seven domains: Demands, Control, Manager
Support, Peer Support, Relationships, Role Clarity, and Organizational
Change.

## Common pitfalls

- **Averaging across domains into one number** — the tool is meant to
be read per-domain against HSE benchmarks; a good average can hide
one high-risk domain (e.g. Demands) needing targeted action.
- **Treating this as an individual diagnostic tool** — it's designed
and benchmarked for team/organizational-level risk identification,
not as a clinical assessment of an individual's stress or mental
  health (see [[mental-health-assessment]] for that).
- **Surveying without linking results to the Management Standards'
associated action process** — the HSE tool is part of a broader
  Management Standards approach including follow-up action planning;
scoring alone without that process misses the tool's intended use.
