# Urology Assessment

Urological evaluation using the IPSS (International Prostate Symptom
Score), with quality of life assessment, renal function review, and
sexual health screening.

## Scoring

**Instrument:** IPSS. Range 0–35.

- **Mild** — 0–7.
- **Moderate** — 8–19.
- **Severe** — 20–35.

## What it covers

Demographics; chief complaint; the IPSS questionnaire; quality of
life; urinary symptoms; renal function; sexual health; medical history;
current medications; and family history.

## Common pitfalls

- **Treating IPSS as prostate-specific in every patient** — while
  named for prostate symptoms, its urinary-symptom items apply broadly;
  don't assume it's automatically diagnostic of a prostate-specific
  cause without further workup.
- **Skipping the quality-of-life question** — IPSS includes a distinct
  quality-of-life item precisely because two patients with the same
  symptom score can be affected very differently; treatment decisions
  should weigh both.
- **Missing renal function review in a lower-urinary-tract-symptom
  workup** — significant obstruction can affect upper urinary tract
  function; a purely symptom-score-based assessment without renal
  function context can miss this.
