Stress testing subjects an application to extreme conditions that exceed its normal operational parameters, to evaluate its breaking point and recovery capability — deliberately pushing past intended capacity limits (user load, data volume, transaction rate, resource constraints) until failure actually occurs.
What gets simulated
Automated stress testing tools simulate thousands of concurrent users, generate massive data sets, and create network bottlenecks specifically to find where and how performance degrades — continuously monitoring response times, memory usage, CPU utilization, and error rates throughout the escalating-stress scenario.
What it reveals
How the application behaves when hardware resources become insufficient, databases become overwhelmed, or network connections saturate — this is the specific value stress testing adds beyond load testing: not just "can it handle expected traffic" but "what actually happens, and how gracefully, when it can't." That understanding directly informs error- handling design and recovery-mechanism implementation.

Continuous execution during development cycles, consistent repeatable test conditions, and detailed performance analytics — stress tests can run overnight or during off-peak hours, producing reports that highlight bottlenecks and stability issues without needing anyone to babysit the run in real time.

Common pitfalls
- Confusing stress testing with load testing — load testing validates behavior at expected/peak capacity (Load Testing); stress testing deliberately goes beyond capacity to find the breaking point. Skipping stress testing means the actual failure mode and threshold remain unknown until a real incident reveals them.
- Stress-testing an environment that doesn't mirror production — a breaking point measured on a smaller/differently-configured environment doesn't reflect the real production threshold.
- Not observing recovery behavior after the stress subsides — how gracefully a system recovers once load drops back to normal is as important as how it fails under stress, and is often not checked.
