# Sleep Quality Assessment

Sleep quality evaluation using the PSQI (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality
Index), covering sleep habits, latency, duration, efficiency,
disturbances, and daytime dysfunction.

## Scoring

**Instrument:** PSQI. Range 0–21.

- **0–5** — good sleep quality.
- **6–10** — poor sleep quality.
- **11–21** — very poor sleep quality.

## What it covers

Demographics; sleep habits; sleep latency; sleep duration; sleep
efficiency; sleep disturbances; daytime dysfunction; sleep medication
use; and medical and lifestyle factors.

## Common pitfalls

- **Scoring PSQI from a single night's recall rather than a
representative period** — the PSQI is designed to capture typical
  sleep patterns over the past month, not an unusual single night;
anchoring on one atypical night skews the result.
- **Missing sleep medication use as a confounder** — medication-assisted
sleep can produce a misleadingly "good" score that doesn't reflect
underlying sleep quality without the medication.
- **Not investigating a poor score for an underlying cause** — a high
PSQI total is a prompt to look for contributing factors (sleep apnea,
restless legs, mood disorder, pain, environmental factors), not an
  endpoint in itself.
