No Code

Use when asked about no-code development platforms — fully visual configuration with zero hand-written code, target use cases, trade-offs and limits — as the more restrictive sibling of low-code.

No-code is an approach to building applications entirely through visual configuration — forms, drag-and-drop builders, and pre-set logic rules — with no hand-written code at all, not even the scripting escape hatches Low Code platforms typically offer.

What no-code platforms typically offer

Fully visual application/workflow builders, pre-built templates, and point-and-click configuration for logic, data, and integrations — designed so someone with no programming background can build a working application, website, or automation. Examples include Bubble, Webflow, Airtable, and Zapier (for automation specifically).

When no-code fits well

Simple websites and landing pages, basic internal tools, straightforward workflow automations (connecting existing services together), and prototypes/MVPs built by non-engineers — no-code is at its best when the need genuinely fits the platform's built-in model without requiring custom logic the platform doesn't already support.

No-code vs. low-code

No-code eliminates hand-written code entirely, trading away customizability for the widest possible accessibility — usable by people with zero programming background. Low Code keeps a coding escape hatch, trading some of that accessibility for meaningfully more flexibility when a requirement exceeds the visual tools' built-in model. Choosing between them is really a question of how likely the project is to need customization beyond what a fully visual builder expresses.

Common pitfalls

  • Hitting a hard capability ceiling — because no-code has zero custom-code escape hatch, a requirement the platform genuinely can't express visually may be entirely unachievable, not just harder — a sharper wall than Low Code's more gradual trade-off.
  • Severe vendor lock-in — no-code applications are typically even harder to migrate off a platform than low-code ones, since there's no underlying custom code to carry forward at all.
  • Underestimating data ownership and portability risk — verify how easily data can be exported before committing significant business data to a no-code platform.
  • Assuming no-code means no maintenance — a no-code application still needs upkeep as requirements, integrations, and the platform itself change over time; "no code" doesn't mean "no ongoing investment."
