# Medical Language Speaking Assessment for Cymraeg

Clinical Welsh-language (Cymraeg) speaking assessment for healthcare
professionals working with Welsh-speaking patients, aligned to the NHS
Wales "More Than Just Words" framework and mapped to CEFR levels A1
through C2, with criteria covering fluency, grammar, pronunciation, and
clinical appropriateness.

## Scoring

**Instrument:** NHS Wales Clinical Welsh Language Speaking Assessment
(CEFR-mapped).

- **A1/A2 (basic)** — can handle simple greetings and signposting;
  cannot hold a clinical conversation unaided.
- **B1/B2 (independent)** — can conduct routine consultations with some
  support.
- **C1/C2 (proficient)** — can deliver complex clinical communication
  competently in Welsh.

## What it covers

Candidate details; a role-play patient conversation (Sgwrs gyda
Chlaf); a role-play clinical explanation (Esboniad Clinigol);
assessment criteria rating; and overall CEFR level with feedback.

## Common pitfalls

- **Treating general conversational Welsh fluency as sufficient for
  clinical use** — the CEFR mapping here is specifically calibrated to
  *clinical* communication (explaining diagnoses, taking a history,
  handling sensitive conversations), which is a distinct skill from
  general social fluency at the same nominal level.
- **Assessing only vocabulary, not clinical appropriateness** — the
  framework explicitly rates clinical appropriateness alongside
  linguistic criteria; a linguistically fluent but clinically
  inappropriate response (poor bedside manner conveyed in otherwise
  correct Welsh) should score accordingly.
- **Confusing this with the English-language OET-style assessment** —
  see [[medical-language-speaking-assessment-for-english]]; the two use
  different frameworks (NHS Wales CEFR-mapped vs. OET-style grading) and
  aren't directly comparable score-for-score.
