# Knitting Hobby

Knitting is the craft of creating fabric by looping yarn using needles
— a portable, relatively low-cost hobby that produces wearable and
decorative items, from a first simple scarf to complex garments.

## The two stitches that underlie everything

Nearly all knitting builds from two basic stitches:

- **Knit stitch** — the most basic stitch, producing a smooth "V"
pattern on the front of the fabric.
- **Purl stitch** — the "reverse" of the knit stitch; combining knit
and purl stitches in different patterns produces textures like
ribbing (stretchy, common on cuffs) and stockinette (the smooth
  fabric most sweaters use).

Learning to knit and purl consistently, with even tension, is most of
what a beginner needs before tackling more complex patterns.

## Choosing a first project

A simple garter-stitch scarf (knit stitch only, every row) is a
common, forgiving first project — it builds muscle memory for holding
the needles and yarn and maintaining even tension, without the added
complexity of shaping or pattern-reading that a garment requires.

## Common pitfalls

- **Uneven tension** — pulling the yarn too tight or leaving it too
loose produces uneven fabric; this evens out naturally with practice
and isn't worth obsessing over early on.
- **Starting with a complex garment as a first project** — sweaters
and other shaped garments involve reading patterns, counting stitches
across many rows, and shaping techniques that are much easier to
learn after a few simpler projects.
- **Not counting stitches regularly** — an accidentally added or
dropped stitch, uncaught for many rows, can be frustrating to trace
back and fix; checking the stitch count periodically catches this
  early.
- **Using yarn/needle combinations mismatched for the pattern** — using
the wrong needle size for the yarn weight a pattern specifies changes
the finished size and drape substantially.
