# Hearing Aid Assessment

Hearing aid candidacy evaluation using the HHIE-S (Hearing Handicap
Inventory for the Elderly – Screening) questionnaire.

## Scoring

**Instrument:** HHIE-S. Range 0–40.

- **0–8** — no handicap.
- **10–24** — mild-moderate handicap.
- **26–40** — significant handicap.

## What it covers

Demographics; hearing history; the HHIE-S questionnaire; communication
difficulties; current hearing aids; ear examination; audiogram results;
lifestyle and needs; and expectations and goals.

## Common pitfalls

- **Recommending or withholding a hearing aid on HHIE-S score alone** —
the score measures self-perceived handicap, which should be
  considered alongside audiometric findings ([[audiology-assessment]]),
not as a substitute for them.
- **Skipping expectations and goals** — hearing-aid satisfaction depends
heavily on whether the device matches the person's actual listening
needs and expectations; a purely audiometric/handicap-score fit
  misses this.
- **Ignoring current hearing-aid experience when present** — for
someone already using a hearing aid, understanding what is and isn't
working with the current device is more informative than starting
  from a blank assessment.
