# Google Docs

Google Docs is a cloud-native word-processing application — part of
[[google-drive]]/Google Workspace, and Google's counterpart to
[[microsoft-word]], built around real-time collaborative editing from
the outset.

## Core capabilities

- **Styles** — named, reusable formatting (headings, body text) that
keeps a document's structure consistent and drives features like the
automatic table of contents and document outline, the same underlying
  concept as [[microsoft-word]]'s styles.
- **Real-time co-editing** — multiple people editing the same document
simultaneously with visible live cursors, without any explicit "share
  a copy" step.
- **Suggesting mode** — Google Docs' equivalent of Word's track changes:
edits are recorded as suggestions that can be accepted or rejected,
  rather than applied immediately.
- **Comments** — threaded discussion attached to specific passages,
including the ability to assign a comment as an action item to a
  specific person.
- **Version history** — a full, automatically maintained history of
every saved revision, with the ability to name specific versions and
  restore an earlier one.

## Common pitfalls

- **Headings not tagged with heading styles** — as with Word, the
document outline, automatic table of contents, and accessibility
support all depend on real heading styles rather than just bold,
  larger text.
- **Suggesting mode left off during collaborative review** — edits made
in normal editing mode apply immediately and aren't easily
distinguishable from the original text, unlike changes made in
  Suggesting mode.
- **Unresolved comments accumulating** — comment threads left open
indefinitely make it hard to tell what's still an open issue versus
  already addressed.
- **Assuming exact fidelity when exporting to `.docx`** — complex
formatting can shift slightly when exporting a Google Doc to Word
format; worth checking before treating an export as a drop-in
  replacement.
