# Audiology Assessment

Comprehensive hearing evaluation covering audiometric testing,
tinnitus, vestibular function, and communication impact.

## Scoring

**Instrument:** Hearing Level Grade, based on pure tone average.

- **Normal** (≤ 25 dB), **Mild** (26–40 dB), **Moderate** (41–55 dB),
**Moderately Severe** (56–70 dB), **Severe** (71–90 dB), **Profound**
  (> 90 dB).

## What it covers

Demographics; chief complaint; hearing history (duration, progression,
prior assessments); audiometric results (pure tone audiometry, speech
recognition, tympanometry); tinnitus assessment; vestibular symptoms
(dizziness, vertigo, balance); otoscopic findings; medical history
(noise exposure, ototoxic medications); and functional/communication
impact on social participation and quality of life.

## Common pitfalls

- **Grading by pure tone average alone, ignoring functional impact** —
two people with the same audiometric grade can have very different
  real-world communication difficulty; the functional/communication
  section exists to capture that.
- **Missing ototoxic medication history** — some common drug classes
(certain antibiotics, chemotherapy agents, high-dose aspirin) cause or
worsen hearing loss; a history without medication review can miss a
  modifiable cause.
- **Treating tinnitus as incidental** — tinnitus assessment is its own
section for a reason; its severity and impact don't always track
with the degree of measured hearing loss.
